Metal weight calculator
Pick a material, a shape and the dimensions to get the weight in kg and the weight per metre. Densities are the same values as on the material pages.
⚖Weight
Weight (each)—kg
Weight (total)—kg
Per metre—kg/m
Cross-section—mm²
Weight (kg) = area (mm²) × length (mm) × density (g/cm³) ÷ 1,000,000
Length L runs into the page. For hex bar, S is the distance between opposite flats (across flats), not between corners (across corners).
Cross-section formulas
- Round bar: π ÷ 4 × D²
- Square bar: A²
- Hex bar: √3 ÷ 2 × S² (S = across flats)
- Plate / flat bar: W × T
- Pipe: π ÷ 4 × (D² − (D − 2T)²)
Notes
- This is the theoretical weight from nominal dimensions, without corner radii or tolerances. Stock weight tables from mills and distributors can differ slightly.
- Densities marked “ref.” could not be found for that exact grade in primary sources; a similar alloy or the general value for steel is used (sources are on each material page).
- Inch stock: 1 in = 25.4 mm, 1 kg = 2.2046 lb. The unit converter does the rest.
