UNC / UNF tap drill sizes

For Unified inch threads (coarse UNC and fine UNF), the number/letter drills common in the US are listed next to the recommended tap drill in mm. TPI is threads per inch; pitch in mm = 25.4 ÷ TPI.

Number and letter drills are from the YG-1 chart (with expected thread engagement); mm values are from the technical data of OSG Japan (recommendations per JIS B 1004-1975) and Yamawa. The two makers differ by up to about 0.1 mm; we show both rather than pick one. Shaded rows are UNF.

“1/4-20” means 1/4 in major diameter and 20 threads per inch. UNF (fine) has more threads per inch for the same diameter, so a finer pitch. The two bars are drawn at the same scale.
