Frequently Asked Questions

Are Italian machine tool orders available monthly?
No. ISTAT discontinued its order index after January 2021, and the UCIMU industry association publishes its order index quarterly. What can be tracked monthly is the production index, the producer price index and trade statistics.
Why does the Italian production index drop sharply in August?
August is the summer holiday month, so production, exports and imports drop sharply every year. The production index measures volume, not value (2021=100), so look at year-on-year rather than month-on-month change. For August 2026, metalworking machine tools were at 54.0 (−8.8% year on year).
Do Italian machine tool exports include parts?
No. The figure is the sum of metal-removal machine tools (HS 8456–8461) and forming machines (HS 8462–8463), excluding parts and accessories (HS 8466). It includes intra-EU exports; for July 2026 it was €362 million (+7.9% year on year).
When are the Italian figures released?
The production index is posted to the Eurostat database in the middle of the second month after, the producer price index late in the second month after, and export and import values in the middle of the month 2–3 months later. Values may be revised in later releases.
