Drill press accuracy checks
Leveling, spindle runout, ball bar, and the like. Standards and how to measure. Lubrication points, oil types and intervals, belt tension, and speeds differ by model. The values here are examples from published instruction manuals, and your machine's instruction manual takes priority. Do not wear gloves while the machine is running (Industrial Safety and Health Regulations, Article 111)
⌖How to inspect
- Runout with a drill mounted (mounting runout)Common
ToolsMeasuring tool for reading runout (dial indicator, etc.; the source does not specify a model)
ProcedureMount the drill by tightening evenly at the chuck's three holes, turn the spindle by hand, and check the runout of the outer circumference. If it is large, remount the drill. OSG recommends measuring and adjusting each time the drill is mounted
TolerancesDrill outer-circumference runout at mounting is within 0.02 mm (OSG). The accuracy of the chuck itself follows the grade in JIS B 4634 (MG grade: 0.08 mm or less)
KIRA asks that the drill be mounted securely in the chuck with no runout
- Smoothness and play of the spindle's up-down travelCommon
ToolsHand feel and ears (abnormal noise)
ProcedureMove the spindle up and down with the handle and check for catching or abnormal noise, and that it returns by spring when you let go (KIRA). If holes are oversized or hole diameters vary, check the spindle for play (OSG)
TolerancesNo allowable value was found in public documents. As an example of a product specification, HOZAN K-21 gives the spindle runout as 0.04 mm (chuck not included)
If anything is abnormal, stop work and have it repaired (KIRA)

- CommonJIS B 4634:1998 Drill chucks (adopted with modifications from ISO 239:1974). For runout accuracy, the MG grade for machine tools is 0.08 mm or less and the E grade is 0.20 mm or less (explanation from Yukiwa Seiko)According to Yukiwa Seiko, the measuring position is set by JIS: for a 13MG, 0.08 mm at 110 mm from the head of the chuck body. The former MS grade (0.04 mm) has been withdrawn. “B4634” engraved on a chuck marks a JIS product[4][5]
- CommonJIS B 4003:1999 Tapered shanks and sockets for tools — Form and dimensions (adopted with modifications from ISO 296:1991). Shape and dimensions of Morse taper (MT) spindles and toolsKIRA's current models have a spindle end of JT6 or JT1 (Jacobs taper), or MT2 or MT3 (Morse taper)[6][7]
The standard texts are paid, so tolerances are written from sources such as in-house standards published by machine manufacturers. For the correspondence between standards, see the standards correspondence table as well.

Items without a mark are those on which two or more materials from different publishers agree. Values and intervals are governed by each machine's specifications. The text is summarized in Kezuriba's own words.
