Drill press lubrication
Where to lubricate, oil types and viscosity (ISO VG), and a replacement guide. Lubrication points, oil types and intervals, belt tension, and speeds differ by model. The values here are examples from published instruction manuals, and your machine's instruction manual takes priority. Do not wear gloves while the machine is running (Industrial Safety and Health Regulations, Article 111)
⛽Lubrication points and oils
| Location | Machine | Oil (example) | Interval guideline |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rack sleeve (spindle sleeve) sliding parts | Bench | Gear oil, industrial Type 1, ISO VG68 (with additives)Apply after the rack sleeve is fully extended (KIRA) | Once a day (4–6 drops by hand)[1][2][3](1 source, for reference) |
| Spiral spring, column outer diameter, rack | Bench | Gear oil, industrial Type 1, ISO VG68 (with additives)Specified in the KIRA NSD-340 and KID-420 instruction manuals. Older models (KHD-6, KND-8, etc.) also have lubrication of the pinion shaft and feed dial (KIRA's lubrication point table) | Once a day (4–6 drops by hand)[1][2][3](1 source, for reference) |
| Other sliding and rotating parts | Bench | Gear oil, industrial Type 1, ISO VG68 (with additives) | Occasionally (2–3 drops by hand)[1][2](1 source, for reference) |
| Grease lubrication holes on models with power feed | Common | Industrial grease (specified by product name in KIRA's table)KIRA's lubrication point table specifies industrial tube grease for the grease holes of the power-feed KRDG-340 and KRDG-420P, and a different grease for the clutch of the KRT-10 tapping machine | Manufacturer's specification[3](1 source, for reference) |
🛢Oil types and how to choose
- Gear oil, industrial Type 1, ISO VG68 (with additives)ISO VG68
- Lubrication of sliding parts such as the spindle sleeve, column, rack, and spiral spring. KIRA's lubrication point table writes this as “lubricating oil 68 [gear oil Type 1 No. 2]”[1][3](1 source, for reference)
- Gear oil 90 (gear oil Type 3 No. 2)
- Worm gears and feed gear units of some older (discontinued) models. Per KIRA's lubrication point table. Check each model's instruction manual[3](1 source, for reference)
- Cutting fluid for drilling
- Cools and lubricates the drill. Choose according to the material. KIRA's cutting condition table lists water-soluble cutting oil or sulfur-containing oil for carbon steel, water-soluble for alloy steel, non-water-soluble (mineral or vegetable oil) for stainless steel, dry (no oil) for cast iron, and light oil for aluminum alloys. Makita asks that machine oil or the like be applied to the drill when drilling metal. KIRA's instruction manual asks for care in handling to prevent fires caused by cutting oil, for example by not using non-water-soluble cutting oil, and for special fire care on wooden floors[4][5][1]
