Lathe Lubrication

Where to lubricate, oil types and viscosity (ISO VG), and change intervals. Intervals, oil types, and values specified by the machine manufacturer for your model always take priority. The values here are examples from published documents; always check your own machine's manual and lubrication chart.

⛽Lubrication points and oils

LocationMachineOil (example)Interval guideline
Ways (sliding ways and linear guides)CommonSlideway oil, often ISO VG68. Haas manual lathes use VG68, Hardinge uses Mobil Vactra No.2 (VG68), and Hurco uses ISO VG68 way oil in its auto-lubeHaas CNC lathe feed axes are automatically lubricated with ISO VG1500 synthetic gear oil. This varies greatly by model, so follow the manualManual lathes: hand pump daily; CNC: automatic lubrication (refill the tank monthly)[1][3][4][5]
Spindle bearingsCommonVaries by model. Hardinge HLV-H uses preloaded ball bearings packed with grease for life (no regreasing needed). Haas CNC lathes use 0W-20 synthetic engine oil from a dedicated tank. Spindle oils for general high-speed spindles are ISO VG2–22 (Mobil)Do not assume “spindle = spindle oil”; follow the machine manufacturer's specificationHaas checks the spindle lube tank oil level monthly[3][6][7]
Chuck (jaw sliding parts, wedges)CommonGrease specified by the chuck manufacturer. Howa Machinery and Hurco recommend molybdenum extreme-pressure grease (Molykote EP), SCHUNK recommends its own LINOMAX, and Kitagawa recommends a dedicated grease; they say general lithium grease is easily squeezed out under high loadsSee the chuck section for details[9][4][10][11]
Headstock (oil reservoir for gears and bearings)General-purposeHaas manual lathes: ISO VG32 (7 L). Colchester specifies a hydraulic-oil-type lubricant (Shell Tellus 33)An example of using a medium-viscosity circulating/bath oil rather than a high-viscosity gear oilCheck the oil level before operation (Colchester: weekly). Do the first change early, then every 6 months to 1 year[1][2]
Feed box (gearbox)General-purposeISO VG32 (1.3 L on Haas manual lathes)Top up as needed; change every 6 months to 1 year[1](1 source, for reference)
Apron (oil reservoir)General-purposeHaas manual lathes: ISO VG68 (1.1 L). Hardinge specifies Mobil's Mobilfluid 350Hardinge says the sight glass full of oil means the reservoir is fullHaas: change after break-in, then once a year (every 6 months for heavy use)[1][3]
Lead screw, feed screw nut, rackGeneral-purposeHardinge: Mobil Velocite No.6 with an oil can. Haas manual lathes: VG68 applied with a brushThe oil viscosity differs greatly between sources (Velocite No.6 is a low-viscosity spindle-oil type)Hardinge: at least weekly. Haas: daily or as needed[3][1]
Tailstock and cross-slide oilersGeneral-purposeISO VG68 applied by handDaily or as needed, 2–3 drops[1](1 source, for reference)
Change gearsGeneral-purposeGrease (no brand specified)Remove old grease and apply a thin coat to both tooth flanks. Meshing backlash is about 0.0127 mmNot stated[1](1 source, for reference)
Hydraulic unit (hydraulic power source for chuck, turret, and tailstock)NCISO VG32 hydraulic oil (both Hurco's TM series and Haas)Hurco TM-series tanks hold 40–90 L. Haas: 30–38 LCheck the level every month to 3 months; change once a year (Hurco) to every 2 years (Haas)[4][6]
Turret (tool post)NCHurco TM series: ISO VG100–150 oil. Haas: VG32 hydraulic oil or semi-fluid grease (NLGI 00), depending on modelEven the oil type differs by modelHurco checks the oil level monthly[4][6]
Spindle gearbox (CNC)NCHaas: automotive synthetic gear oil SAE 75W-90 (2.4–3.0 L)Check the level monthly; change once a year[6][8](1 source, for reference)
Tailstock (CNC)NCHaas: grease (Mobilith SHC 460)Haas documents disagree: “one full stroke every 6 months” versus “grease monthly”[6](1 source, for reference)

🛢Oil types and how to choose

Slideway oil (way oil)ISO VG32〜220
A dedicated oil for ways, tables, and feed mechanisms. It prevents stick-slip (the jerky motion of alternately sticking and slipping) at low feed speeds and maintains positioning accuracy[12][13][14][5][15]
How slideway oil works
Way speeds range from 100 m/min down to 0.001 mm/min. At high speed, fluid lubrication applies and viscosity matters; at low speed, boundary lubrication applies and additives (sulfur- and phosphorus-based extreme-pressure agents and oiliness agents) matter. That is why low-speed behavior differs between products[12](1 source, for reference)
Way types and what they need from the oil
Sliding ways are rigid and damp vibration but have high friction, so the oil's sliding characteristics affect positioning accuracy. Rolling ways have low friction and allow fast feeds; they are common on production lines that use water-soluble coolant, so they need an oil that separates easily from the coolant. Hydrostatic ways float on oil pressure so stick-slip does not occur, and the oil must also perform as a hydraulic fluid[12](1 source, for reference)
How to choose slideway oil viscosity68 (horizontal) / 220 (vertical)
VG68 for horizontal ways on small to medium machines; VG150–220 for large machines, high surface pressure, and vertical or inclined surfaces[5][15][16]
Separates easily from water-soluble coolant
On many machines slideway oil drains into the coolant tank. Mixed in, it feeds spoilage bacteria and the coolant deteriorates faster. If it separates easily, the floating oil can be skimmed off. Hurco also requires a coolant that does not absorb slideway oil but lets it float. ENEOS explains that good sliding characteristics and good separability are generally hard to achieve together[12][17][5][4]
Resistance to dripping (tackiness)
On vertical sliding surfaces such as columns, oil runs off and the film breaks, causing seizure. Tackifiers are added to make the oil resist dripping[12][14][5]
Spindle oil (spindle/bearing oil)ISO VG2〜22
Low-viscosity oil for spindle bearings and similar uses. Mobil offers ISO VG2–22 for high-speed spindle bearings and recommends VG2 for bearings with very small clearances. Idemitsu lists VG10 as equivalent to the old “60 Spindle Oil” and VG22 to “150 Spindle Oil”[7][18][19]
Gear oil (industrial gear oil)ISO VG32〜460
Medium-load enclosed gears (spur and bevel): ISO symbol CKB, VG32/68/150. High-load enclosed gears (e.g. worm): extreme-pressure type CKC, VG150/320/460[18](1 source, for reference)
Hydraulic oilISO VG32〜68
General hydraulics: HL (VG32/46/68); anti-wear: HM (VG32/46/68); combined hydraulic and way use: HG (VG32/68). For hydrostatic ways, some machines use a slideway oil that doubles as hydraulic fluid[18][20][21]
Multi-purpose oil (for machine tools)
One oil covering bearings, gears, hydraulics, and ways, to reduce the number of oil types used in a plant. Idemitsu cautions not to mix multi-purpose oil with commercial slideway oil[18][22]
What is ISO VG (viscosity grade)?
A number classifying industrial lubricating oils by kinematic viscosity at 40°C. Defined in ISO 3448 and JIS K 2001 (Industrial liquid lubricants – ISO viscosity classification) (Japan)[23][24]
ISO 6743-13 G family (slideway oil classification)
ISO 6743-13 defines the slideway (G) family within the classification of industrial lubricants. Idemitsu gives G-32, G-68, G-220, etc. as equivalents for its products[25][18][17]
ISO symbols for machine tool lubricants (correspondence with MAS standards)
Idemitsu's equivalence table lists the ISO symbols for gears (CKB, CKC), bearings (FD), slideways (G), and hydraulics (HL, HG, HM), along with whether the Japan Machine Tool Builders' Association (JMTBA) standard (MAS) has that category. The number and title of the MAS standard itself could not be confirmed in published sources[18](1 source, for reference)

ISO 19378 (Machine tool lubricants: classification and specification)
Defines how to select lubricant classes for machine tools, and their specifications. Its predecessors are ISO/TR 3498 and ISO/TR 10481 (both withdrawn)[26](1 source, for reference)
Standards for lubrication instructions and lubrication systems
The way machine builders present lubrication instructions is covered by ISO 5169 and JIS B 6016-1 (presentation of lubrication instruction diagrams); lubrication systems by ISO 5170 and JIS B 6016-2. The old JIS B 6016:1990 (Machine tools – General rules for lubrication) was withdrawn in 1998[27][28][29][30][31]
