AXES & LICENSESCAM axes and licenses
Many CAM products are sold as “start with 2.5D, then add 3D and 5-axis when you need them,” but for the same 3+2, there are products thatinclude it in the base and products that only offer it if you buy a 5-axis option. We checked the tiers of 23 products on each maker’s official pages and lined them up.
Even with a 5-axis machine, you still need
the CAM and the post
to match up, you know.

▲The CAM tier staircase
Higher steps are more likely to be higher tiers or sold separately. Where the steps break differs by product (see the table below).
The yellow 3+2 is a 3-axis toolpath in substance, yet it is the step where makers differ the most in where they place it.
≡What to look at when buying, by number of axes
2-axis (2D)
- The tier sold under the name “2-axis” may mean 2D cutting for cutting machines, engraving, plasma, and laser (BobCAD-CAM Essentials, SprutCAM X Cutting), or an entry edition combining 2-axis milling and 2-axis turning (ZW3D 2-Axis Machining). You can’t judge the contents from the name alone.[1][2][3]
ExamplesZW3D 2-Axis Machining: drilling, 2-axis milling, 2-axis turning, post, NC output[3]SprutCAM X Cutting: for 2-axis milling machines and cutting machines[2]CAM-TOOL 2DCAM: “2-axis / 2.5-axis machining” in one module[4]
2.5-axis (2.5D)
ExamplesFusion base, NX CAM Standard, SolidCAM 2.5D Milling, CAMWorks 2.5 Axis Mill, WorkNC 2D licence, SOLIDWORKS CAM Standard[5][6][7][8][9][10]
3-axis (3D surfaces)
ExamplesNX CAM Advanced (Standard + 3-axis), WorkNC 3X licence, CAM-TOOL 3DCAM, BobCAD-CAM Advanced[11][9][4][1]
4-axis indexing (3+1)
ExamplesFusion base’s “3+1 and 3+2 positional milling,” BobCAD-CAM Ultimate’s “3+1 indexing,” ESPRIT’s Y-axis 3+1 and C-axis indexing options[5][1][13]On the NC control side too, positioning (3+1, 3+2) and simultaneous 4/5-axis are handled by separate functions (Haas uses G254 DWO for positioning and G234 TCPC for simultaneous machining, and instructs you to cancel G254 before simultaneous machining)[14][15]
Simultaneous 4-axis (rotary machining)
- Cutting while moving the rotary axis. In many products it falls in the same upper tier or add-on as 5-axis (Fusion Manufacturing Extension, Mastercam Multiaxis, NX CAM Premium rotary machining, SprutCAM X Rotary configuration). CAMWorks makes 4 Axis Mill a separate module from 5 Axis Mill.[5][16][17][2][18]
Note“Rotary wrapping” and “cylindrical / polar milling” wrap a flat toolpath around a cylinder, and are sometimes included in a mid tier (BobCAD-CAM Ultimate, GibbsCAM GO Milling). They are not necessarily the same as simultaneous 4-axis, which cuts an arbitrary shape while rotating.[1][12]
3+2 (indexed 5-axis / positional 5-axis)
NoteFree and personal editions often cannot use 3+2 (personal Fusion has 3+2, 4-axis, and 5-axis only in paid editions; SolidCAM Maker cannot output 5-axis G-code).[25][26]
Simultaneous 5-axis
ExamplesFusion Manufacturing Extension, PowerMill Ultimate, Mastercam Multiaxis, GibbsCAM 5-Axis Milling add-on (MultiBlade and Porting are separate), NX CAM Premium, DELMIA Advanced Milling, WorkNC 5-axis, Auto5, hyperMILL 5AXIS (special-purpose packages are separate), CAM-TOOL Simultaneous 5-Axis CAM[5][20][16][27][17][21][9][23][4]Some products use a “convert a 3-axis path to 5-axis” function as the entry point to simultaneous 5-axis (WorkNC Auto5, CAM-TOOL Simultaneous 5-Axis CAM, VISI, Space-E 5Axis).[9][4][19][24]
Mill-turn (multitasking) and Swiss-type
ExamplesGibbsCAM GO Mill/Turn (choose and combine Milling and Turning tiers), Mastercam Mill-Turn (built on Mill and Lathe), SprutCAM X Turn option (added to 2.5x Mill or higher; with B axis, 5x Mill + Turn)[12][29][2]NX CAM Premium has continuous B-axis turning and Synchronization Manager. In DELMIA, Turning covers mill-turn and Swiss-type machines; any machine configuration and multi-turret synchronization are in Premium[17][21]Fusion includes mill-turn (turn-mill) already in the base tier[5]
⟲Which tier does 3+2 go in? (three patterns by maker)
1Included in the base or a lower tier
Fusion base, PowerMill Standard, SprutCAM X (included from the start in 2.5x Mill and above), DELMIA Machining Milling (4/5-axis pre-positioning), CAMWorks 2.5 Axis Mill (4/5-axis pre-positioning)[5][20][2][21][8]
NoteFree and personal editions often cannot use 3+2 (personal Fusion has 3+2, 4-axis, and 5-axis only in paid editions; SolidCAM Maker cannot output 5-axis G-code).[25][26]
▦Product × machining table (the lowest tier that includes that machining)
Each cell shows the tier where the official page says that machining is “possible” (free editions excluded).A blank cell means “could not be confirmed in the sources,” not “not possible.”Colors show how the tier is sold (base, add-on, option, etc.).

+Can you add axes later?
- Many makers state officially that you can “start from a lower tier and add later” (Mastercam: “start with 2D and add multiaxis; no need to replace the software”; GibbsCAM: “level up at any time”; CAM-TOOL: “the configuration can be changed by adding modules”; NX: “start with the core sheet and expand”; Fusion: add the Manufacturing Extension).[34][12][4][35][36]
- There are three ways to add: (1) add an add-on or option to the same software (Fusion, Mastercam, WorkNC, ZW3D, Space-E, SprutCAM X, ESPRIT), (2) switch to a higher tier (PowerMill, NX, DELMIA, GibbsCAM), (3) buy a separate product (such as CAXA’s 3-axis and multi-axis editions).[36][34][9][3][24][2][13][20][35][21][12][33]
- What you receive with maintenance or a subscription is new versions; features of higher tiers are not included. Mastercam’s EULA explicitly excludes separately sold modules, options, and add-ons from maintenance. One source / reference[37]
?Can you use a 5-axis machine (or a machine with a 4th axis) with CAM for 2 or 3 axes?
- Some NC controls have a function that makes a tilted plane the coordinate system. Haas’s G268 defines a tilted work coordinate system after indexing the B and C axes, and canned cycles and so on work as usual within it. G254 (DWO), in 3+1 / 3+2 positioning, corrects the discrepancy between the workpiece position assumed in CAM and the actual workpiece position, using the rotation center information. One source / reference[39][14]
- With a CAM 3+2 function (a positioning license or module), the post outputs everything from creating a coordinate system by selecting a face, to the rotation and work-offset shift, to calling the NC coordinate rotation function (as in the SolidCAM Indexial description). One source / reference[22]
- Limit 2: Because the CAM doesn’t know the machine’s rotary axes, you can’t check interference between the tilted spindle/table and the fixture/workpiece in CAM. Machine simulation, which looks at the machine’s motion, is often in a higher tier or option (in CAM-TOOL, machine simulation is an option of 3DCAM and standard in Simultaneous 5-Axis CAM; in NX, it is in Premium and as a token add-on).[4][17][6]
◎Machine, CAM, and post are decided separately
- “Machine axes,” “CAM tier axes,” and “axes the post can output” are decided separately. Even if you own a 5-axis machine, if the CAM is at a 3-axis tier it can only make 3-axis (and indexing) NC, and even with a 5-axis CAM tier, without a post suited to that machine and NC control you won’t get correct NC.[40][41][4][24]
- Multi-axis posts are built to match the machine’s axis configuration (kinematics) and NC control. Mastercam builds posts together with NC control makers and offers dedicated posts matched to the control and kinematics through resellers. One source / reference[40]
- The post itself may be split by tier or option: Space-E’s ExtendPost (3-axis output for HEIDENHAIN and Siemens) and the 5Axis option’s 5-axis post (FANUC, HEIDENHAIN), CAM-TOOL’s standard post (for 3-axis machines), NX’s post-processing add-on (tokens) and a separate fee for machine-specific posts, SolidCAM Maker’s limit of 3 posts.[24][4][6][26]
- NC control functions are needed too. For Haas, the tilted-plane coordinates (G268) are a 5-axis G-code, while workpiece position correction for positioning (G254) and tool center point control for simultaneous machining (G234) are separate functions; whether the post outputs them changes the setup at the shop (you don’t need to re-post even when the workpiece position differs from what CAM assumed). One source / reference[39][14][15]
- A rough order to check before buying: (1) your machine’s axis configuration and NC control, (2) whether the CAM has a post for that machine (free, paid, or reseller-made), (3) which tier includes the machining you want (watch where 3+2 sits), (4) which tier has machine simulation. One source / reference[40][4][24][6][5]

- License
- Subscription (shown as annual; the previous survey showed monthly, 1-year, and 3-year)[42]
- Price
- Autodesk Fusion ¥116,600/year(2026-10-14)Fusion Manufacturing Extension (added to Fusion) ¥251,900/year(2026-10-14)Autodesk Fusion for Manufacturing ¥350,900/year(2026-10-14)
- Note
- Base Fusion alone can do 3+2 (indexed 5-axis) and 3+1. What it lacks is machining that moves the rotary axes “simultaneously.” Even if you own a 5-axis machine, you don’t need the extension for indexing only.[5]
- Note
- The same article contradicts itself on whether WCS (work coordinate system) probing is in the base: the body says “the base edition has WCS-setting probing,” while the comparison table says “No” for the base edition.[5]
- Note
- Personal (free) can’t use 3+2 either. This is the biggest difference from the commercial base edition.[25][5]
