BY MACHINE TYPECAD/CAM by machine type
On the shop floor you often hear “this CAM for 5-face machines” or “that one for molds,” but there are almost no free surveys that count how widely each is actually used. So for each of 12 machine types and fields, we gathered products and features the vendor markets as “for this field”, along with surveys and public sources, and always attached the type and strength of evidence.
What is listed here is only that “a dedicated feature for that field exists.” It is not a ranking by popularity, and it is not a recommendation.A blank means “we could not confirm it,” not “it cannot be used.”

▣Bridge/gantry 5-face machine
Large parts are machined on the top and all four sides in a single setup. Because an angle head is fitted to the spindle and indexed, the key point is whether the CAM holds the angle head’s shape and length as a tool and can check for collisions.
FJW-100/160 + MAZATROLYamazaki Mazak
●●●●○The machine tool builder’s own software
A bridge/gantry machining center for 5-face machining. It comes with an angle head as standard, indexes to 72 positions at 5° steps, and can machine the top and sides in sequence. The product page says 5-face programs can be built with MAZATROL conversational programming or written as G-code (EIA/ISO).[1]
hyperMILL 2026 (angle head support)OPEN MIND Technologies
●●○○○CAM vendor lists it as a feature
The 2026 release lets you define an angle head as part of the NC tool in TOOL Builder, and reflects it in toolpath calculation, optimization, simulation, and collision checking. It also simulates the angle head’s approach and retract motions. Initial support is limited to Siemens SINUMERIK 840D and Heidenhain controls.[2]
New version announced 2026-05-05. Note that supported controls are limited
What we could not confirmWe could not confirm on official pages how other CAM systems (Tebis, NX, Mastercam, etc.) handle angle heads. We also found no free survey counting which CAM is most common at 5-face machine shops.
▦Vertical and horizontal machining centers (2.5D production parts, multi-part setups)
Parts that are mostly holes, pockets, and contours are loaded many at a time onto pallets or tombstones (multi-sided fixtures) and run through. On the CAM side, automatic feature recognition and the ability to replicate the same operations across each fixture face and each part are what help.
FeatureCAM (tombstone machining)Autodesk
●●●○○CAM vendor’s dedicated module
You specify the number of faces and the dimensions of the fixture to create a tombstone document, then place parts with a wizard. You can choose to have operations automatically ordered to minimize tool changes, or to finish each face completely before rotating.[3]
2018 help (confirmed from a search-result excerpt). As of October 2026, FeatureCAM is still sold as “Autodesk Fusion with FeatureCAM”, and the product page says it includes PartMaker and HSMWorks.
CAM AssistCloudNC
●●●○○CAM vendor’s dedicated module

What we could not confirmWe could not confirm on official pages whether Mastercam, ESPRIT, or hyperMILL have a dedicated function for multi-part setups (user forums describe replicating with a transform function, but we do not use that as a source). We found no free survey of which CAM is most common in production-part shops.
✺Simultaneous 5-axis (impellers, blisks, turbine blades)
Parts with many blades need the rough machining between blades, the blade surfaces, the root fillets, and the hub surface to be cut without collisions while tilting the tool axis. Many CAM systems offer a package dedicated to this shape.

What we could not confirmWe could not confirm a package dedicated to “ports” (intake/exhaust ports) on the official pages we opened this time (hyperMILL’s 5-axis menu does have a Tube item). We found no figures on which dedicated modules are used most.
◒Molds and dies (stamping dies, injection molds, electrodes)
Freeform surfaces are cut for long hours with small-diameter tools, and direct machining of hardened steel and electrodes for EDM are common. In Japan, domestic mold CAM remains strong.
Global ranking of Japanese mold CAM vendors (CIMdata)CIMdata
●●●●●Surveys by research firms and industry associations
In CIMdata’s CAM revenue rankings, NDES placed 7th in 2008 and C&G Systems placed 9th in 2010. In 2010, C&G, just after a merger, had the highest growth rate at 91.4%.[21][22]
Ranking by direct revenue (software and services). Only older years are freely published; recent rankings are available only in the paid report.
3D CAD adoption in the mold and molding industry (Osaka Prefecture)Osaka Industrial Economy Research Center
●●●●●Public sources and local-government surveys
Among 154 small and medium-sized mold and molding companies in Osaka Prefecture, 3D CAD adoption was 64.3% (2016 survey), higher than the 35.9% for small and medium manufacturers overall (2015 survey, 217 companies). Adoption mostly began in the 1980s–1990s, earlier than in manufacturing overall, and the report attributes this to early adoption in the automotive industry.[23]

What we could not confirmWe found no product-by-product share (%) of mold CAM in Japan in free sources.
⟳Multitasking machines and mill-turn; Swiss-type (sliding headstock) automatic lathes
With multiple spindles and turrets, the program has to handle waiting (synchronization) between the channels that move simultaneously. For CAM, simulation that reproduces machine motion and a machine-specific post-processor are essential.
ESPRIT EDGE 2025 (Swiss-type support)Hexagon
●●●●○Machine tool builder states the pairing
The 2025 release adds Swiss-type features for the first time, citing the CITIZEN L series and STAR SR series as examples. The machine’s digital twin handles overlapping, composite axis control, and automatic pre-positioning, and you can set up guide bushings, collets, and tool post blocks.[28]

What we could not confirmWe found no free survey that shows with figures that “many shops handle 2-axis lathes with conversational programming.” We can say that builders provide conversational programming, but the share in actual use is unknown.
⚡Wire EDM and die-sinking EDM (electrode design)
Wire work is basically 2-axis contours and 4-axis (taper) cuts with different shapes top and bottom. Die-sinking needs a separate process of designing and machining electrodes. A distinctive feature is that EDM machine builders offer CAM themselves.

“Market leader” is a self-assessment with no third-party figures
What we could not confirmWe did not check the builder’s own software for EDM machines from FANUC, Makino, and others this time. We found no third-party survey of which CAM is most common for wire EDM.
⚙5-axis gear machining (gear milling)
Instead of a dedicated gear cutting machine, tooth forms are cut with general-purpose tools on a 5-axis or multitasking machine. Suited to prototypes, repair parts, and small-lot production.
