Tap teeth chip

Tapping Tapping

Check first

  1. Tap does not suit the material or application
  2. Insufficient lubrication or unsuitable cutting fluid
  3. Chips jammed (including being pulled in during reversal)

Try first

  1. Select a tap suited to the workpiece material and hole shape (sometimes with a smaller rake angle or lower cutting part hardness)
  2. Make the tap drill hole deeper, or reduce the thread depth
  3. Prevent work hardening of the tap drill hole (review the drilling conditions)
