🔧Machinability notes (as stated in the sources)
- Takiron C.I.: Can be machined with ordinary cutting tools for steel. It is rigid and tough with a high softening point, so it rarely softens, sticks or chips during cutting. However, frictional heat at the cutting edge creates residual stress, which can cause cracks and loss of properties, so take care. Wear protective gear, as fragments may fly off[5]
- Takiron C.I. machining conditions: Drilling: standard steel drill (point angle 118°, rake angle about 5°). Plastic drills offer no advantage. Diameter 6 mm or less: 800 rpm; 6.1 mm or more: 300 rpm; feed 0.2–0.4 mm/rev. A large diameter at high rpm will dig in. Too slow a feed causes heat and leaves residual stress. Use smooth chip discharge as the guide. Lathe: tool with 0° rake and 3° clearance at 550 rpm. Milling: φ20 end mill, 2 mm depth of cut, 425 rpm, feed 55 cm/min[5]
- Stress cracking (chemical cracking): Ensinger advises that amorphous materials such as TECANAT crack easily in aggressive media such as oils and greases, and recommends avoiding cutting oil where possible or using a water-based one (do not raise the feed too far, avoid high pressure, keep the rotation speed high). Röchling also cites susceptibility to stress cracking from acetone and machining coolants, and says amorphous plastics such as PC should be cooled with air or water only. MCG says mineral-oil cutting fluids can cause stress cracking in Altron PC, and recommends that if coolant is used, the part be washed with isopropyl alcohol and pure water immediately after machining[10][8][11][12]
- Annealing (stress relief): Takiron says cutting, drilling and similar operations leave large internal strain, so anneal at 120°C for 2 hours or more before painting. MCG recommends 130°C for PC, heating rate 10–20°C/h, hold 10 min/mm, cooling 5–10°C/h (in air or nitrogen). For tight-tolerance parts, rough machining, annealing, then light finish machining is best. The Covestro document (for molded parts) gives 230–270°F for 30 minutes to 2 hours or more in a batch oven, or 260°F for 15 minutes per 1/16 inch of wall thickness in a forced-convection oven[5][12][13]
- MCG machining conditions (Altron PC, carbide): Turning: clearance angle 5–15°, rake angle 0–10°, feed 0.05–0.4 mm/rev, cutting speed 200–400 m/min. Drilling: clearance angle 5–10°, rake angle 3–5°, point angle 90–120°, feed 0.1–0.3 mm/rev, 50–100 m/min. Milling: clearance angle 5–15°, rake angle 0–15°, feed up to 0.4 mm/tooth, 200–400 m/min[12]
- Röchling machining conditions (Sustanat PC): Sawing: clearance angle 15–30°, rake angle 5–8°, 30–80 m/min, tooth pitch 3–8 mm. Turning: clearance angle 5–10°, rake angle 6–8°, approach angle 45–60°, 250–300 m/min, feed 0.1–0.5 mm/rev. Drilling: clearance angle 8–10°, rake angle 10–20°, point angle 90°, 50–100 m/min, feed 0.2–0.3 mm/rev. Milling: clearance angle 10–20°, rake angle 5–15°, 300–500 m/min. The table carries a "caution with cutting fluid" mark[11]
