15-5PH
ISO M (stainless steel)Some makers: ISO P (steel)Tool makers differ on the ISO workpiece group: Sumitomo Electric (classifies precipitation-hardening stainless steels as M). This grade is not named specifically: M[3]; Sandvik Coromant: P (Classifies martensitic precipitation-hardening steels as P (MC code P5.0.Z.PH))[4]. Choose insert grades and data according to the maker of the tool you use.
Precipitation-hardening stainless steel (martensitic). Number: UNS S15500 (ASTM Type XM-12). Standard: XM-12 in ASTM A564/A564M (bar), ASTM A693 (sheet/plate) and ASTM A705 (forgings); AMS 5659 (bar, forgings) and AMS 5862 (sheet/plate).
🌐JIS and international equivalents
“Close” means composition or properties are not exactly the same. Before substituting, check the values in each standard.

Differences between the equivalents (from the sources)
- JIS : No equivalent JIS grade was found in primary sources (not in the Japan Stainless Steel Association comparison table, nor in the Sanyo or Nippon Steel catalogs)
- EN X5CrNiCu15-5: In Ugitech's aerospace literature, X5CrNiCu15-5 is given as the common designation for 15-5PH (UNS S15500), with WL 1.4545.4, WL 1.4545.9 and ASTM A564 listed in the standards column. The composition ranges have not been compared
- GB : The GB grade designation was not confirmed in primary sources (the Baosteel catalog also has no 15-5 type)

✈Main aerospace uses (as stated in the sources)
- Carpenter lists aircraft components, valve and engine parts, and fittings and fasteners as applications, and says it has been used where high transverse strength and toughness are required[2]
- MIL-HDBK-5J: used for corrosion-resistant, high-strength parts up to 600°F, with good transverse ductility and strength even in large sections. In its 17-4PH section it recommends 15-5PH (consumable electrode vacuum melted), which has high low-temperature impact values, for critical low-temperature applications[6]

⚖Density
7.75 g/cm³
Value for the solution-treated condition (Condition A). ATI 7.75 and Carpenter 7750 kg/m³ agree. After aging: Carpenter H900 7.80, H1150 7.82; ATI H900 7.81, H1150 7.86. MIL-HDBK-5J does not distinguish conditions and gives 0.283 lb/in³ (≈7.83). The ATI 15-5 physical properties table has exactly the same figures as the ATI 17-4 table

🔧Machinability notes (as stated in the sources)
- In the solution-treated condition it can be machined at about the same speed as Type 304; for H900, 60% of that speed is suitable. The highest machining speeds are possible with H1150 and H1150M (MIL-HDBK-5J)[6]
- In the solution-treated condition it machines like Type 302 and 304, and machinability improves as the aging temperature rises. H1150M is the easiest to machine. If high strength is needed after machining in H1150M, re-solution treat and then give the standard aging treatment (Carpenter)[2]
- To get the softest condition for machinability and formability, the two-step treatment in ASTM A693 can be used (1400°F x 2 h air cool + 1150°F x 4 h air cool) (ATI)[1]
- On aging, H900 shrinks 0.0004-0.0006 in/in and H1150 shrinks 0.0008-0.0010 in/in (MIL-HDBK-5J)[6]
