SUS420J2
ISO P (steel)Stainless steel bars (martensitic, 13Cr, high C). Standard: JIS G 4303 (bars) / JIS G 4304 and G 4305 (sheets and plates).
🌐International equivalents
“Close” means composition or properties are not exactly the same. Before substituting, check the values in each standard.

Differences between the equivalents (from the sources)
- AISI 420: Agrees between the Japan Stainless Steel Association's comparison table (based on ISO 15510:2010), Kyocera's comparison table, Baosteel's catalog and DEW's 1.4028 datasheet (JIS 420J2, AISI 420). Nippon Steel's cold-rolled steel sheet catalog also gives ASTM 420 as the similar standard. However, Sanyo Special Steel's composition table writes AISI 420 only in the SUS420J1 row, and the AISI column of SUS420J2 is blank (UNS S42000 is given for both). AISI 420 spans both SUS420J1 and SUS420J2
- EN X30Cr13: Agrees between the Japan Stainless Steel Association's comparison table, Kyocera (DIN X30Cr13), Baosteel and DEW. 1.4028 in EN 10088-3 has C 0.26–0.35 and Cr 12.0–14.0 (DEW), so its upper limit of C is lower than JIS (C 0.26–0.40)
- GB 30Cr13: In Baosteel's stainless steel long products catalog, 30Cr13 (formerly 3Cr13) = S42000, 420 = SUS420J2 = 1.4028. Kyocera's comparison table also matches the former grade 3Cr13 with SUS420J2. S42030 appears only in the Japan Stainless Steel Association's table. The grade name in GB/T 20878-2024 was not confirmed
⚗Chemical composition (mass %)
As specified in JIS (Japan Stainless Steel Association JIS steel grade composition table / Aichi Steel and Sanyo Special Steel catalogs)
⚖Density
7.75 g/cm³
The "basic mass" of 7.75 in Nippon Steel's cold-rolled steel sheet catalog and the 7750 kg/m³ in Aichi Steel's catalog agree. Sanyo Special Steel gives a specific gravity of 7.75 under "SUS 420". DEW (EN 1.4028) gives 7.70 kg/dm³

🔧Machinability notes (as stated in the sources)
- In the Japan Stainless Steel Association's machinability comparison (from the Stainless Steel Data Book, Home Appliances volume), SUS420J2 is placed in the same group as SUS303Se and ranks below SUS416, SUS410F2, SUS430F, SUS303, SUS420F and SUS420F2 (the table is divided into an upper section containing free-machining steels and a lower section with SUS304, SUS316 and others, and it cannot be read from the table whether the upper and lower sections may be compared on the same scale)[10]
- DEW's datasheet rates the machinability (Spanbarkeit) of 1.4028 as "mittel" (medium) and also states automatic lathe machining (Automatenbearbeitung) is "possible"[9]
- Aichi Steel describes SUS420F as "SUS420J2 with S and P added to improve machinability" and SUS420F2 as "with Pb added to improve machinability", and these serve as alternative grades when easier cutting is required[2]
