SUS304
ISO M (stainless steel)Stainless steel bars (austenitic). Standard: JIS G 4303 (bars) / JIS G 4304 and G 4305 (sheets and plates).
🌐International equivalents
“Close” means composition or properties are not exactly the same. Before substituting, check the values in each standard.

Differences between the equivalents (from the sources)
- AISI 304: Agrees between the Japan Stainless Steel Association's comparison table of JIS and related foreign standards (based on ISO 15510:2010) and DEW's datasheet. However, 304 in ASTM A276 has Cr 18.0–20.0 and Ni 8.0–11.0, so its upper limit of Ni differs from JIS (10.50) (as stated by DEW)
- EN X5CrNi18-10: 1.4301 in EN 10088-3 has C ≤0.07, Cr 17.5–19.5, Ni 8.0–10.5 and N ≤0.10, so its ranges differ slightly from JIS (C ≤0.08, Cr 18.00–20.00)
- GB 06Cr19Ni10: In the grade comparison in Baosteel's stainless steel long products catalog, 06Cr19Ni10 = S30400, 304 = SUS304 = 1.4301. Kyocera's comparison table also matches 0Cr18Ni9 with SUS304. S30408 appears only in the Japan Stainless Steel Association's table (based on ISO 15510). GB/T 20878-2024 is the current edition (the 2007 edition was withdrawn); the grade name in the new edition was not confirmed
⚗Chemical composition (mass %)
As specified in JIS (Japan Stainless Steel Association JIS steel grade composition table / Nippon Steel stainless steel bars)
⚖Density
7.93 g/cm³
"Basic mass" of 7.93 in Nippon Steel's catalog. DEW (EN 1.4301) gives 7.9 kg/dm³, a rounded value, so there is no contradiction

🔧Machinability notes (as stated in the sources)
- In the Japan Stainless Steel Association's machinability comparison (from the Stainless Steel Data Book, Home Appliances volume), among the austenitic grades SUS304 is in the low-machinability group and the free-machining SUS303 is in the high group[13]
- Sandvik Coromant states that for austenitic stainless steels, work hardening makes the surface and chips hard and causes notch wear, and adhesion and built-up edge also occur[3]
- DEW's datasheet rates the machinability (Spanbarkeit) of 1.4301 as "mittel" (medium)[9]
- In Daido Steel's drill life test (SKH51 φ5, feed 0.07 mm/rev, 15 mm deep blind hole, dry), the cutting speed equivalent to a tool life of 1000 mm is 14 m/min for SUS304 (SUS303: 23, C3604: >300)[14]
