Alloy 600
ISO S (heat-resistant alloys & titanium)Solid solution strengthened nickel-base alloy (Ni-Cr-Fe. Not precipitation hardening). Number: UNS N06600. Standard: ASTM B166 (bar and wire) / ASTM B168 (plate) / ASTM B564 (forgings) / SAE AMS 5665 (bar) / AMS 5540 (plate).
🌐JIS and international equivalents
“Close” means composition or properties are not exactly the same. Before substituting, check the values in each standard.
| System | Designation | Number | Relation | Confidence |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| UNS | Alloy 600 | UNS N06600 | — | |
| EN | NiCr15Fe | 2.4816 | close | Agrees in 2+ sources[2][1][7] |
| JIS | NCF600 | JIS G 4904 (tubes for heat exchangers) | equivalent | One source / reference[7] |
| GB | — | — | Not confirmed |
Differences between the equivalents (from the sources)
- EN NiCr15Fe: Number 2.4816 agrees across Special Metals, VDM and Nippon Steel. The symbol NiCr15Fe is from VDM only. VDM's EN 10095 composition includes C 0.05–0.15, P≤0.02, Ti≤0.3, Al≤0.3, and its ranges differ from UNS (C≤0.15 only)
- JIS NCF600: Nippon Steel's tube catalog lists NCF600 (JIS G 4904) = N06600 (ASTM B163) = 2.4816 on the same row. The composition in the table is C≤0.15, Si≤0.50, Mn≤1.00, P≤0.030, S≤0.015, Ni≥72.00, Cr 14.00–17.00, Fe 6.00–10.00, Cu≤0.50. Special Metals' UNS table has no upper limit for P. No material directly listing NCF600 for bar (JIS G 4901) or plate (G 4902) was found
- GB : No primary source was found (materials giving GH3600 etc. are only from distributors)
📄Related specifications (AMS, ASTM etc.)
Specifications called up on purchase orders and drawings. AMS are SAE aerospace material specifications, split by product form (bar, plate, forging), melting practice and heat treatment. Standard texts are paid, so only titles and scopes checked on the publishers’ public pages are shown.

✈Main aerospace uses (as stated in the sources)
- Used for engine parts and airframe parts in aviation that must withstand high temperatures. Examples: lockwire (anti-rotation wire), exhaust liners, turbine seals[1]
⚗Chemical composition (mass %)
As specified in UNS N06600 (Special Metals' Limiting Chemical Composition is Ni+Co)
⚖Density
8.47 g/cm³
One source / reference[1]
Special Metals (0.306 lb/in³, 8.47 Mg/m³). VDM gives 8.5 g/cm³ and ATI 8.42 g/cm³, so the value differs by source, hence medium

🔧Machinability notes (as stated in the sources)
- Special Metals: slightly easier to machine than 304 stainless and slightly harder than free-machining 303 stainless. Use a rigid machine and tools large enough to withstand the cutting load and carry away heat; keep tools sharp and correctly shaped[1]
- VDM: machining in the annealed condition is preferable. Because it work hardens readily, use a low cutting speed and a moderate feed, and keep the tool continuously engaged. A depth of cut that reaches below the work-hardened layer from the previous operation is important. Removing heat with plenty of water-soluble cutting fluid greatly helps stable machining[2]
