S45C
ISO P (steel)Carbon steels for machine structural use. Standard: JIS G 4051 (JIS G 4051:2026).
🌐International equivalents
“Close” means composition or properties are not exactly the same. Before substituting, check the values in each standard.

Differences between the equivalents (from the sources)
- AISI/SAE 1045: The material designation comparison tables of Mitsubishi Materials and Kyocera list S45C and 1045 in the same row. UNS G10450 is from the SAE specification table in Nippon Steel's "Bar and Wire Rod" catalog. The C range of SAE 1045 is 0.43–0.50 (SAE1045 column of Nippon Steel U006), which differs from S45C (0.42–0.48)
- EN C45E: Mitsubishi Materials' comparison table places S45C in the same row as 1.1191 Ck45. C45E in EN 10083-2 has C 0.42–0.50, Si ≤0.40, Mn 0.50–0.80, P ≤0.025, S ≤0.035 (thyssenkrupp Materials Schweiz), so the Mn and Si ranges differ from JIS
- EN C45: C45 in EN 10083-2: C 0.42–0.50, Si ≤0.40, Mn 0.50–0.80, P ≤0.045, S ≤0.045, Cr ≤0.40, Mo ≤0.10, Ni ≤0.40, Cr+Mo+Ni ≤0.63 (Saarstahl). The upper limits for P and S are looser than in JIS
- GB 45: From the GB column of Kyocera's metal material designation comparison table. GB-side composition could not be obtained from primary sources, so no comparison was made
⚗Chemical composition (mass %)
As specified in JIS G 4051
| Element | Range | Confidence |
|---|---|---|
| C | 0.42 – 0.48 | Agrees in 2+ sources[6][7][8] |
| Si | 0.15 – 0.35 | Agrees in 2+ sources[6][7][8] |
| Mn | 0.6 – 0.9 | Agrees in 2+ sources[6][7][8] |
| P | ≤ 0.03 | Agrees in 2+ sources[6][7][8] |
| S | ≤ 0.035 | Agrees in 2+ sources[6][7][8] |
| Cu | ≤ 0.3 | Agrees in 2+ sources[6][7][8] |
| Ni | ≤ 0.2 | Agrees in 2+ sources[6][7][8] |
| Cr | ≤ 0.2 | Agrees in 2+ sources[6][7][8] |
| Ni+Cr | ≤ 0.35 | Agrees in 2+ sources[6][7][8] |
Note: By agreement between the parties, Cr may be less than 0.30% and Ni+Cr less than 0.45%. Elements not listed in the table must not be added intentionally, except for the purpose of finishing the molten steel (note from the Kobe Steel specification table, JIS G 4051 2016 revision)
⚖Density
7.85 g/cm³
One source / reference[9]
No value specific to S45C was found. The mass calculation formula in Nippon Steel's hot-rolled steel sheet catalog uses 7.85 as the density of steel (treated as a reference)
