🔧Machinability notes (as stated in the sources)
- Victrex recommended cutting conditions (unfilled): Turning: cutting speed 100–300 m/min, feed 0.1–0.7 mm/rev, clearance angle 5–15°, positive rake angle 5–15°, depth of cut 1–6.5 mm, dry or with water-soluble or oil-based coolant. Milling: 180–230 m/min with carbide. Drilling: 120 m/min, feed 0.05–0.20 mm/rev, point angle 118°, clearance angle 12°[6]
- MCAM cutting guide (Ketron 1000 PEEK column): Turning: clearance angle 5–15°, rake angle 0–10°, feed 0.05–0.5 mm/rev, 200–400 m/min (carbide). Milling: feed up to 0.4 mm/tooth, 150–300 m/min. Drilling: point angle 90–120°, feed 0.1–0.3 mm/rev, 50–80 m/min (carbide)[7]
- Its modulus is lower than that of metals, so strong clamping easily causes warping and distortion. Leave stock evenly and as symmetrically as possible. Low thermal conductivity traps heat, so either water-soluble or oil-based coolant can be used (Victrex)[6]
- Machining can introduce stress or release residual stress, so annealing may be needed before or during machining. For parts with heavy material removal, anneal again before final finishing (Victrex)[6]
- Victrex annealing: heat uniformly to 200°C, hold 1 hour per mm of wall thickness, cool at 10°C/h to below 140°C. For stress relief, the hold temperature goes up to 250°C. For dimensional stability, hold at 20°C or more above the maximum service temperature, before final finishing[6]
- MCAM annealing: for PEEK, hold temperature 250°C, heating rate 10–20°C/h, hold 10 min per mm of wall thickness, cooling 5–10°C/h, in air or nitrogen (MCAM)[7]
